OAGIS Release 10 Public Review One has Shipped!

The first Public Review of OAGIS Release 10 (OAGIS X) began in October. We are planning to complete that Public Review on November 13. We will then review and incorporate the feedback as it makes sense.

Public Review Two is planned to begin in early December. That version will contain the Chemical Industry content from our Gap Analysis with the Chem eStandards. That was part of our agreement with CIDX when they merged with OAGi in 2009. Public Review Two is also planned to contain the HR-XML harmonization work that Steffen Fohn of ADP has been working on as well as some manufacturing enhancements.

The Working Groups continue to meet to wrap up the technical work and we are planning a Webinar entitled "A Business Case for OAGIS X".

We encourage your participation in this exciting and important work. All OAGi members are invited to join and if you are interested please contact us here. We need all the smart people we can get.

New Manufacturing Opportunities with NIST
OAGi has been approached by two longtime contributors from NIST to propose two new interesting projects for the Manufacturing Industry. The first one is entitled "Sustainability Characterization of Manufacturing Supply Chains ". The goals of this project include developing the necessary models, methods and tools to assess and optimize total energy and material usage, and to enable OEMs to aggregate the energy and material sustainability contributions from their own manufacturing and assembly processes with those from their supply chains.
The second proposal from NIST for an OAGi activity is entitled, "Advancing Communication of Manufacturing Information". The goal of this activity is to increase the productivity of U.S. small manufacturers by enabling digital communication of manufacturing information for production and data processing through development of reference models and systematic, verifiable modeling methodology that will enable new standards for manufacturing supply chain integration.
We will have an opportunity to hear more and plan how to move forward at our Plenary Session in San Francisco on November 29.
Mobile, Cloud, JSON Initiative continues to make progress
Our Mobile, Cloud, and JSON Working Group continues to meet and make progress. The most recent work has focused on using OAGIS within a REST framework, the most popular way to code API's in the cloud and for mobile.
The team has started a Data Management Guide and a Design Guide and will focus on those documents for the foreseeable future. The Working Group has also put together a list of possible use cases as a way to help themselves and others visualize the possibilities.

We welcome you to join the Working Group so please write to us at inquiry@oagi.org.

Welcome Back to Nigel Davies
Nigel Davies, who served as the OAGi Chair a few years ago has rejoined OAGi with his new employer, Etail Solutions (www.etailsolutions.com). Please join me in welcoming him back.

OAGIS X also supports the newest UN/CEFACT Core Components Specifications, providing better rigor in the data model and also an increased ease of use.

As a Release Candidate this release is provided for 30 days in order to be reviewed by the public and for comment. This is the first of three release candidates that will be provided prior to the general release of OAGIS 10. As with all OAGi release candidates this release is NOT to be used for implementation as it will not be supported going forward.

We are planning a webinar entitled "A Business Case for OAGIS Release 10.0" as well so look for that announcement.

OAGIS Release 10 Release Candidate One:

Tremendous Response to our Mobile Cloud JSON REST Webinars

We completed our third and final Mobile Cloud JSON REST yesterday to a good crowd.  We have had amazing response as our first Webinar last week had 80 people registered so we added two more sessions this week.

We explained that since 1996 when OAGIS was first shipped, OAGi has evolved from pre-XML to DTD’s in 1998, XSD in 2002, UN/CEFACT Core Components in 2005 and the upgraded version of UNCEFACT Core Components in 2012.

Mobile, Cloud, JSON, REST is a natural evolution for OAGIS.  Read our Position Paper here.

OAGi issues a Press Release today announcing additions to OAGIS for Mobile and the Cloud

OAGi today released a press release announcing the decision to support Representational State Transfer (REST) processing for our OAGIS Mobile and Cloud based JSON API’s.  These are the most common technologies used for common mobile and cloud platforms.

This is being done to enable users to leverage their investment in the OAGIS XML-based open standard for Mobile Business and Cloud Solutions.   You can view the press release here.
OAGi also just released a Position Paper on this topic that has more detail.  You can download it on our web site at http://www.oagi.org.

Thank you to all members who on this Working Group, including ADP, Cisco, GXS, Infor, iBASEt, and Oracle.

Welcome Infor to the OAGi Policy Board

We welcome Pat O’Connor of Infor to the OAGi Policy Board.  Pat served on the Policy Board in the past and also contributed to our Working Groups and to our work with UN/CEFACT over the years.  Infor first joined OAGi in 2006 so they are a long term member as well.

Please join me in welcoming Pat O’Connor and Infor back on our OAGi Policy Board.

New Partnership – OAGi partners with NIST and the Object Management Group (OMG)

OAGi initiated has recently joined a new partnership to build Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) diagrams for our OAGIS Scenarios.  This is an exciting development as BPMN has become very important and a widely adopted graphical way to express Business Processes.

OAGi has tried several times in the past to get this done but the resources have historically not materialized.  We are working with a very seasoned business process expert and OAGi staff will provide guidance.  We are discussing the best way to eventually package and deliver the end result to our members.

This is a first step to eventually generating  Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) definitions which are machine readable and power process engine execution software products.  This step is not included in this effort, but this is a step towards BPEL sometime in the future.

REMINDER – OAGi Face to Face Meetings re-scheduled for November 29 - 30

We will soon open registration for our upcoming face to face meetings on November 29 and 30, 2012.  The meetings are once again hosted by Oracle at their headquarters in Redwood City, California.  The Plenary meeting will be on Thursday, November 29 and we will have Working Group Meetings on Friday, November 30.  The OAGi Policy Board will also meet on Wednesday, November 28.

We are planning two themes for the upcoming meeting.  The first is our Mobile Business and Cloud Computing initiative and the second theme is the beginning of the launch of OAGIS Release 10, (OAGIS X).  We are planning many exciting speakers and case studies.  We are also planning an awards ceremony for our most current Outstanding Contributor awards.

Look for more announcements and information very soon.

OAGIS Release 10 work continues with plans for first Public Review later this year

OAGIS Release Ten (OAGIS X) Working Groups continue to meet on a regular basis and we encourage your participation.  We can use all the smart people we can get!  The HR-XML mapping exercise has been completed and the only major remaining content work to complete is the Chem eStandards gap closure.

It is important that OAGIS X contains functional equivalence to the Chem eStandards because this was the agreement before the CIDX merger in 2008.

All OAGi members are invited to join any of our Working Groups.  If you are interested please contact us here.

Progress with our Mobile, Cloud, JSON, REST, Big Data, NoSQL, Social Media (MCJRBNS) Working Group

Our Working Group continues to make excellent progress.  We reviewed a proposal from Abhijeet Ranadive of Cisco for a Technical Design guide.

Abhijeet’s proposal included the following items:

URL Naming Convention
Query Parameter Decision
Exception Handling
HTTP Code
Process Exception (ConfirmBOD?)
Authentication
Partial Response / Pagination
Content Negotiation [XML vs JSON]
Versioning

Kurt Kanaskie from Merck will work with Abhijeet to build the first draft and bring it back to the Working Group.

The Working Group also discussed the requirement for round tripping from XML to JSON and back.  They have found a couple of tools and will continue to evaluate them.

There were several other topics discussed as well and action items were developed to address each one.  This Working Group is getting terrific participation.

We are also working on a White Paper which we plan to release the Wednesday after the US Labor Day holiday.

The team meetings every other Thursday at 4 PM EDT.

Open O&M Group re-convened last week

Members of the Open O&M (Open Operations and Maintenance) Group re-convened last week in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Open O&M is a group of several standards groups working together to share ideas, associated technologies, and to collaborate whenever possible.

The meeting was used to catch up on all of our initiatives and explore ways to collaborate.  The MESA group builds a standard that uses the OAGIS Platform and we discussed ways to make better use of the upcoming Release 10 platform.

Mimosa and MESA introduced a new specification they are building to provide a common middleware API.  The purpose of the specification is to provide end users with a single interface regardless of the product they are using, for example, WebSphere, BizTalk, etc.
Some of our readers may not remember that OAGi published a common middleware API called OAMAS (Open Applications Group Middleware API Specification) in 1997.  The OAGi Policy Board voted to discontinue that effort several years later to focus on the content.

This new specification is planned to be released next year.  One more exciting thing about the new specification is that is uses the OAGIS protocol (BOD, Verb, Noun) as the format for the calls to the API.  You will hear more on this moving forward so we invite you to stay tuned.

Chem eStandards Release 5.2 Ships Monday, August 20, 2012

Release 5.2 of the Chem eStandards (i.e., Ag eStandards ) Release 5.2 public review period has completed and the Architecture Council and the OAGi Policy Board have voted to approve the final shipment.  The changes to the standard were requested by several companies within AgGateway, who is a member of the OAGi Chemical Industry Council and a partner of OAGi.

Jim Wilson, our Chem eStandards Chief Architect, is finishing the packaging this week.  I encourage you to look for them next Monday on our web site here.

REMINDER – OAGi Plenary Meeting is scheduled for November 14 - 15

We invite you to save the dates of November 14 and 15, 2012 on your calendar for our upcoming Plenary and Working Group meetings hosted by Oracle at their headquarters in Redwood City, California.  The Plenary meeting will be on Wednesday, November 14 and we will have Working Group Meetings on Thursday, November 15.  The OAGi Policy Board will also meet on Tuesday, November 13.

We are planning two themes for the upcoming meeting.  The first is our Mobile Business and Cloud Computing initiative and the second theme is the beginning of the launch of OAGIS Release 10, (OAGIS X).  We are planning many exciting speakers and case studies.

Look for more announcements and information as we get nearer to the meetings.

Mobile, Cloud, JSON Initiative continues to make progress

Our Mobile, Cloud, and JSON Working Group continues to meet and make progress.  The most recent work has focused on using OAGIS within a REST framework, the most popular way to code API’s in the cloud and for mobile.

The team has put together and initial document on processing and will be build that out over time.  They have mapped the OAGIS Verbs to the REST Verbs as part of that process.  The think is that they may need augmented at some point but not right now.

The team has taken a decision that the highest form of content will be the OAGIS Noun and the lowest could be even at the Element level.  The componentization of the OAGIS architecture really lays a strong foundation for this new use of OAGIS.

None of this means we will be eliminating the BOD Messaging capability, we are augmenting it with the REST capability.

Remember it is the content that is important and the more ways we can use the content the more useful the common data model will be of users of OAGIS.

OAGIS Release 10 work continues with plans for first Public Review later this year

OAGIS Release Ten (OAGIS X) Working Groups continue to meet on a regular basis and we encourage your participation.  We can use all the smart people we can get!  The HR-XML mapping exercise has been completed and the only major remaining content work to complete is the Chem eStandards mapping and enhancements.

It is important that OAGIS X contains functional equivalence to the Chem eStandards because this was the agreement before the CIDX merger in 2008.

All OAGi members are invited to join any of these groups.  If you are interested in joining any of these Working Groups, please contact us here.
